Svetonedeljski kraluž

Svetonedeljski kraluž a woman΄s necklet. The technique and artistic works of Sveta Nedelja kraluš have recently been placed on list, by the Ministry of Culture, which identifies them as being part of the intangible (and tangible) cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia. As such they can be considered not only a Sveta Nedelja souvenir, but also of Croatia.

Svetonedeljski kraluž a woman΄s necklet. Around Sveta Nedelja΄s area kraluž starts to appear at the beginnig of 19. Century.
Kraluž is worn around a neck on a white collar made of lace so that his multicolor beads and ornaments stand out more clearly. Ornaments of kar, križeki, šlinga, and frk are gained by stringing multicolored coral or glass beads on a eight white horsetail strings – lasi. Kraluž is made of beads of different colors but commonly only red, white and blue beads are used in it΄s production, or more simply and modest, only red and white with several decorative beads. Kraluž is an ornament denoting the age of a woman, her married and social status, and sometimes also her economic status. Young  woman΄s kraluž in it΄s upper part of šlinga has four smaller and round frk΄s made of white and some orange beads which make young woman΄s kraluž look very specific. Older woman΄ wear kraluž with simple and straight šlinga made with only one white or read bead in šlinga΄s upper part. Kraluž has been worn on a important church holidays such as Eastern, Whit Sunday, Corpus Christi, then  for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and for Christmas or for other important events in woman΄s life. Kraluž was never worn for Lent and Mourning. For a production of one kraluž more than several thousands of coral and glass beads are required as well as special skills of knitting – pletenje. Value of kralužwas sometimes compared with value of golden necklaces that were more common in more urban areas such as cities. Kraluž is one of the most original neck ornaments and it marks larger ethnographic period of Sveta Nedelja΄s area.
